We all find ourselves procrastinating at some point, don’t we? It’s like there’s this invisible force holding us back from tackling those tasks we know we should be doing.
But have you ever paused to ask yourself why?
I’ll let you in on a little secret: I procrastinate quite a bit. I know many of you might be surprised by that, but I too suffer from analysis paralysis at times. Especially if the task ahead of me is one I know will take me a while.
So how do I push past the resistance? Here’s a framework with 3 practical ways you can structure your time and space, and get you thinking about how to beat procrastination.
Step One: Take It One Step at a Time
Big tasks can really feel overwhelming, like trying to scale a mountain in one leap. That’s why I break them down into bite-sized pieces. I set a timer for 10, 15, or 20 minutes and just dive in. Surprisingly, once you’re in motion, it’s rather difficult to stop. Whether I feel motivated or not, I tell myself to tackle something easy to start with, making the initial step a lot less intimidating.
Step Two: Give Yourself Very Clear Deadlines
We need realistic timeframes. I am guilty of setting deadlines that are more aspirational than achievable. To keep things realistic, I map out tasks in my diary and stick to the schedule. Accountability is key, so if you need to, find a business buddy or mentor to help you stay on track. Even a simple weekly email to someone outlining your goals can be a powerful motivator.
Step Three: Ditch Distractions and Celebrate the Wins
Let’s be honest, our phones are massive distractions. One minute of scrolling can easily turn into half an hour. I combat procrastination by placing my phone in another room. Sometimes, I use an app called Coffitivity, which simulates the ambience of a café, providing me with comforting background noise. It’s crucial to identify what’s demanding your attention and learn to set boundaries.
Don’t forget to reward yourself when you’ve made some progress. Remember, progress isn’t about starting and finishing. It can be the milestones in between, the chunks of work you get done even when it’s overwhelming. Every single step is worth celebrating, as far as I’m concerned!
Which of these do you need to focus on the most? Taking that first step, setting clear deadlines, or avoiding distractions? Many women I work with find the last one particularly challenging.
Why not kickstart your journey by setting a timer and tackling that task you’ve been putting off? Trust me, you’ll feel far more accomplished afterwards.
Once you’ve given one of these steps a shot, I’d love to hear about your experience. Send me a DM on Instagram or drop me a message. Let me know how you’re getting on. I always love to hear from you!
