When we feel passionate about what we are doing, the hours fly by and we feel energised in our work and others see our ‘spark’. Think about those people you meet who you know are in the right job. They have a genuine love for what they do and look forward to Monday morning. You can see that their passion and purpose are aligned and that they feel fulfilled. They are totally in their sweet spot, where results happen because they are playing to their strengths more often than not.
Are you a person who has found their passion and purpose? Or is this something you are still searching for?
There is a misconception that finding passion and purpose is just an issue for people starting out in their careers. However, I find that for some of my clients, it is more of a problem for those stuck in a job/business they don’t enjoy.
Finding your passion is easier for some than for others. Many people come out of studies and find themselves in roles that they have been advised are the best for them based on academic results but sadly they don’t have a passion for. Or they are promoted within an organisation where they have been working for a number of years but don’t necessarily find themselves aligned with the core values of the organisation.
Some people know in their heart of hearts what their passion and driving force is, whereas others are unsure but know that what they are currently doing is not their passion. When thinking about what your passion is, think about something that you feel compelled to do, something that sits with you and leaves you with strong emotions. If this doesn’t work, think about what you have always wanted to do, or the things you always wanted to do/achieve when you ‘grew up’.
“Follow your passion, it will lead you to your purpose” – Oprah Winfrey.
Our purpose is the reason for which we do something. When we are working with a purpose, we feel content and aligned. You know how it feels like when your back is out- you can barely function; moving is difficult; you get headaches; you can’t sleep or eat properly; and nothing feels right. It isn’t until you go to the chiropractor and get realigned that you get a sense of relief and you can function properly again. The same can be said about purpose. When you don’t have purpose or you are not aligned with your purpose then nothing else works. You are unmotivated, it can be difficult to concentrate or commit to what you are doing, and you are generally not happy. It is not until you find your purpose or are aligned with it that you can function to your full potential.
Finding your purpose, is about figuring out why you are here. For some people it is about finding a job that allows them to excel in their chosen field and reach their full potential. For others it may be finding a job that allows them to balance their need to focus on other areas of their life (parenting, volunteering, nurturing their mental and physical well being).
Whatever your passion and purpose is, you need to make sure that you are being true to yourself.
It’s hard getting up every day if you just know in your heart that your passion and purpose are not aligned to the work you do. Let me share with you one of my all-time favourite client stories about a woman who knew that her passion and purpose were not aligned and made sure that she did everything in her power to ensure that they were.
Lauren was doing a sales job and she just knew it wasn’t the job for her. She was selling training and development solutions but knew that something was missing. What was missing was her ability to help people and mix in her other love – YOGA! So, Lauren and I started working together and we went about looking for a role that would incorporate her love of Yoga AND allow her to help people. Lauren went on a deep dive of discovery and found the perfect role for her, a Recruitment Advisor role at a well-known Yoga brand – actually, she did not find the role, she networked really hard and showed them how much she wanted to be a part of the business, and after a few months of doing all she could, was offered the role. Now, her passion and purpose align exactly.
