Running a business during school holidays is not for suckers.
It took me a number of years to find a rhythm that works for me so if you’re in the early years of running your business, you’re probably wondering how on earth this all works!
How do you run a business while the kids are at home bouncing off the walls and manage it all without going crazy?
Like I said, it took me a few years to find the right balance but after some experimenting, my family has landed in a rhythm that works for us.
When I first started my business, my initial vision was to enjoy every school holiday with the family. So every school holidays, I cleared my calendar completely. Although this sounds great in theory, the reality was quite different.
While it worked wonders for my family, it left me feeling exhausted having to work twice as hard after the holidays. Avoiding work entirely during the holidays just wasn’t feasible for me so we had to find a different solution.
Find a rhythm that works for you
Now, I clear the first week of every school holiday for quality family time. During this week, I don’t do any work and we lap up the fun.
During the second week, I keep my schedule light, still making time for my daughter but also spending a few hours each day on business tasks. The beauty of running your own business is that it’s possible to take your laptop down to the beach and enjoy the best of both worlds.
There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. My husband is a teacher which means he’s on holiday too and I understand not everyone shares my privilege, especially at different business stages. Whether you’re in year one or seven, it’s important to iterate until you discover what fits your needs.
Here are some ideas that might help you find what works for you and your family
Work shorter days: A lot of my clients choose to work shorter days over the school holidays. They might work in the morning while the kids enjoy quiet activities at home then head out for family adventures in the afternoon. This strikes a nice balance for everyone.
School holiday programs: There are so many awesome programs out there where the kids have a ball and it gives you an opportunity to get work done. Don’t ever feel guilty for utilising these programs. You’re not expected to spend every moment with the kids! Sometimes, you have to get some work done – and that’s more than okay.
Combine forces with other parents: A lot of people work from home these days so try to team up with other parents to do a swap. You take their kids for a morning and they take your kids for a different morning. This is a win-win situation for everyone involved and a beautiful example of the community working together.
Local library: Your local library is your friend! Over the school holidays, libraries often have extra activities for kids so you can sneak an hour of work in while the kids have some fun.
Create a Schedule: On the longer holidays especially, I print out my schedule for the day so my daughter knows exactly what’s happening. This makes it clear when I’m busy, and when we can have some fun together.
When faced with longer school holidays, like the Christmas break, I clear my calendar for a whole month to recharge. By the end of the month, I’m itching to return but this break is crucial for my wellbeing and allows us all to indulge in some quality family fun.
Juggling business and family is undeniably challenging, but with thoughtful planning and a flexible mindset, it can be exceptionally rewarding.
What’s your plan for the Christmas holidays?
