Build your business the brave way

You started your business to make an impact, earn good money and create more choice in your life. Then sales entered the picture.

Suddenly, you were expected to pitch, promote, follow up and talk about yourself. Perhaps you found yourself avoiding the phone, softening your offer or hoping referrals would keep the pipeline full. I know that feeling.

When I started my business, I genuinely believed I couldn’t sell to save myself. I was good with people and good at my work. Sales felt deeply uncomfortable. So I practised.

I had coffee after coffee. I reached out to people on LinkedIn and asked for conversations. Over the past nine years, I’ve had thousands of sales conversations and helped women build businesses through clear offers, strong relationships and consistent action. Sales is a learnable skill. This book will help you build it.

Emma McQueen, business coach for women, smiling in a light blue suit — results-focused business coaching for female service-based business owners.

Business development is CEO work

A full calendar can create the feeling of progress. Real business growth comes from speaking with people, building trust, making offers and following up.

Your website can wait another hour.

That social post can wait.

The person who asked for your proposal probably needs a phone call.

Selling Without the Ick will help you focus on the actions that create opportunities and revenue. You’ll learn how to build a practical system, track your activity and keep moving when confidence wobbles.

Because busy isn’t building. Brave is building.

Simple to understand Brave to practice

I’ve worked with thousands of women in business, and the results speak for themselves:

    • You’ll find practical steps throughout the book to help you apply what you’ve learned.
    • This is a book to write in, return to and use.
    • Take one action. Make one call. Send one follow-up. Ask one clear question. Offer the damn thing.
    • Confidence grows through repetition.

Meet Emma McQueen

I’m Emma McQueen, Australia’s go-to sales coach for female founders running service-based businesses.

I help women move through their fear of selling, create clear offers and do business development in a way that feels human and gets results.

I’ve spent years coaching women, running business development sprints and having thousands of conversations about sales. I know how easy it is to avoid this work, especially when you care deeply about how people experience you.

I also know what becomes possible when you get clear, practise consistently and ask for the yes or the no.

I wrote Selling Without the Ick as the practical playbook I wish I’d had when I started my business.

Emma has taken a system she's learnt, lived and refined, and turned it into something tangible - bespoke to how women in business actually want to sell. Her spirit is infectious: the rhythm she wants us to bring to business development doesn't feel like a task, it feels like something you can genuinely enjoy. She teaches you a way in that makes sales stop feeling scary and start feeling like yours to embrace. But what got me was how it calls you out. It names your hangups, what you're hiding behind, and the real cost of staying there and reminds you, again and again, that there's always another way. No need to feel stuck. She believes in us, with a tenacity that's frankly contagious. I finished it quietly confident, hopeful, and full of self-belief. This is Emma's hard-won wisdom, generously shared with a grace and empowerment that only comes from someone who genuinely wants you to realise your potential. Go and do the exercises. You'll thank her.

Flock Effect

Emma has a remarkable ability to unpack the mindset blocks that make sales feel uncomfortable and replace them with confidence, clarity and practical action. She provides a refreshingly human approach to business development, showing that success is less about being fearless and more about having the courage to take consistent action that builds trust, relationships and results.

Emma's Selling Without the Ick, held up a mirror to the way I’ve been doing business. As someone who can happily spend hours behind creating content, connecting people, nurturing relationships and having conversations, Emma’s reminder that business development ultimately comes down to a clear offer and a yes or no decision landed hard, because sometimes all that “being visible” can feel productive while also protecting us from the vulnerable part, actually asking someone to work with us - eikkkkkk.

The biggest shift for me was understanding that confidence doesn’t create clarity, clarity creates confidence, when you know exactly what you offer, who it’s for and why it matters, selling doesn't feel so pushy, it simply becomes an invitation, which I really tried to use this approach in my first round of selling my new advisory membership and so far so good.

As a recovering people pleaser, the idea of collecting 100 no’s has felt both deeply uncomfortable and strangely freeing, a no isn’t proof that I’m not good enough. It’s information, data, and proof that I was brave enough to make the offer.

This book is practical, honest and human, I love how Emma has stripped away the complicated and brought business development back to what it should be, real conversations, genuine service and the courage to be clear. I closed it feeling challenged, reassured and very ready to keep getting those no's.

Reading this book is like hearing my echo for why I can’t sell, partnered with a best friend showing a path towards why I can and will sell through service… Progress over perfection is becoming a mantra. Courage to believe is becoming a norm. No more excuses is a lived reality because “…holding back the impact you’re here to make…” isn’t ok. Well done Em! Another gift to the world.

Finally a book that helps women move past the anxiety and hesitation that keeps us hiding behind busy work. Selling Without The Ick gives us a human and relational perspective on selling and coaches us to build understanding, overcome barriers and confidently and consistently implement business development that actually works. Emma's experience and expertise shine through on every page; as does her genuine commitment to elevating women in business. It's generous and practical, and if you do the work, the results will follow.

Selling Without the Ick is designed for the business owner who tells herself she is bad at sales. And I know this, because I was once this person. This book is full of Emma-isms, and will have you laughing your head off, while at the same time, demystifying the sales process. My favourite part of the book is the reminder is that sales is about relationships, and when we have real conversations, we build real relationships, and this is what will help us win the work. Not the NLP bullshit and hard-sell sales tactics that so many sales trainers preach. People do business with people they know, like and trust, and Selling Without the Ick reminds us of this. It's really not rocket science.

Emma has a way of making business and selling feel simple, practical, and achievable, with plenty of quick wins you can put into action immediately. I only wish I’d read this at the very start of my building my business as I now have the confidence and know-how to sell in a way that feels genuine, not icky, and actually gets results.
